Being in a bunker for 15 years may have been the best thing that ever happened to Kimmy Schmidt.

The “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” (streaming on Netflix) is a hilarious and insightful show that features a fictional character — the show’s namesake — who survives being held captive by a charismatic cult leader and celebrates her freedom by moving to New York City. On the surface, there’s nothing funny about Kimmy’s circumstances, but she makes the best of her new life by approaching it with unbridled enthusiasm and a willingness to do whatever it takes to get by (not to mention a little dumb luck).

It’s a very likable show. I found myself rooting for Kimmy because of her optimism and determination despite challenging circumstances. I think there’s also something to be said about approaching life with a willingness to try everything; studies have shown that a person’s level of happiness is connected to keeping low expectations. That might sound like settling, but it’s not: It’s about being happy with and grateful of your situation. Compared to being in a bunker for 15 years, most things don’t phase Kimmy.

Beyond the clever writing, situational humor, and excellent performances, the heart of the show lies in its humanness. We all have our challenges, but it’s a good reminder that we’re all in this crazy life together — let’s make the best of whatever comes our way!
