Tuesday Tunes: “Heart of Gold”

Standard

A new feature to Justin’s Jobs is “Tuesday Tunes”, during which I feature songs or albums that I believe tell a memorable story about living and working. I love movies and music, which is why I’ve also added “Monday Movies” to the blog!

My inaugural song for Tuesday Tunes is “Heart of Gold” by Neil Young. I’ve listened to this tune my whole life. I’ve always enjoyed the music of the song, but the words took new shape recently. After moving back to California last fall, I have learned the appreciate the Golden State for just how beautiful it is. I had always known, but I took it for granted; I suspect all Californians do, to some degree… It’s a big state, and it’s hard to see everything it has to offer.

But while on vacation recently from my job in Hollywood, my wife and I drove through the San Joaquin Valley and up the 101 to Santa Cruz, where we enjoyed spending time with friends, as well as a visit to the redwoods. As you’ll see in the lyrics below, quite literally, Neil Young mentions both Hollywood and the redwoods. They’re two different worlds. And in between those worlds are mountains, forests, farmlands, and the world’s largest ocean. There’s a lot to see, and a lot to think about. It’s a reminder of how much of it was here before me and how much of it will be here after me.

I realized that I need to make more of a difference, more of an impact. Sure, I’m proud of my achievements, my friends and family, and my life. But it’s not enough unless I’m giving all that I have to others. And that begins by having a heart of gold.

“Heart Of Gold” Lyrics courtesy AZLyrics

I want to live,
I want to give
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold.
It’s these expressions I never give
That keep me searching for a heart of gold.
And I’m getting old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.
I’ve been to Hollywood
I’ve been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold.
I’ve been in my mind,
It’s such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold.
And I’m getting old.
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
And I’m getting old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold.
You keep me searching and I’m growing old.
Keep me searching for a heart of gold
I’ve been a miner for a heart of gold.
